Award Information

This page lists all the awards that I have included in my "award" pages. For each one, there is a brief description and a website URL you can visit (if it has one).

Academy Awards - www.oscar.com or www.oscar.org

The Academy Awards are the main national film award for the US. They take place with much hoopla in March. Sometimes I agree; sometimes I don't - but regardless I watch. The first website displays information, pictures, etc. about the last Academy Awards. The second has information on the actual Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences itself. The Academy Awards have been ranking films since 1935.

American Society of Cinematographers - www.cinematographer.com

The ASC was founded in 1919 and started giving annual awards in 1987. The ceremonies take place in February.

Australian Film Institute Awards - www.afi.org.au

I believe these are the main film awards of Australia. They take place in November.

Bambi Awards

These awards began as a film-only award, but have become a multi-media award with only a few movie-related categories remaining. They take place in Germany.

Bavarian Film Awards

These awards take place in Munich, Bavaria, Germany.

Berlin International Film Festival - www.berlinale.de

This film festival has taken place every year since 1951. It takes place in February. The site is pretty good.

Boston Society of Film Critics Awards

This critics' event has been around since 1981.

British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards
(BAFTA) - www.bafta.org

These are the main film awards for Great Britain. It was started in 1947 by a group of men in the film industry. Who did they choose as their chairman? The god of directoring - David Lean. The awards ceremony is scheduled February (one month before the Academy Awards).

British Independent Film Awards - www.bifa.org.uk

Celebrates British independent films. This is a very cool site. Lots of information about British independent film as well as the awards. The awards ceremony is scheduled for October. They have been presenting awards since 1998.

These awards take place in Poland. They celebrate outstanding cinematography in film. The awards have been given out since 1993. The ceremonies are set to take place in December.

Cannes Film Festival - www.festival-cannes.fr

Yes, this is Cannes. Lots of stars, lots of independent films. Blah, blah, blah. The Cannes Film Festival began in 1946 and is scheduled to take place in May every year.

César Awards - www.cesarducinema.com

The Cesar is the main national film award in France. The Cesar Awards are given out in February.

Chicago Film Critics Association Awards - www.chicagofilmcritics.org

This is a critics event that has taken place since 1989. The ceremony takes place in February or March.

Cinequest San Jose Film Festival - www.cinequest.org

This festival takes place in San Jose, California. Started in 1991, it showcases independent films. Usually takes place in the spring.

Deauville Film Festival - www.festival-deauville.com

This festival takes place in Deauville, France. This festival has been competitive since 1995 and showcases American films in France. The festival is scheduled to take place in September.

Directors Guild of America - www.dga.org

I really think the name of the group says it all. They have been giving out honors since 1948. The site has good information on the awards.

Emmy Awards - www.emmys.tv

These are the main national TV awards for the US. Founded in 1946, the latest Emmy Awards were announced on September 10, 2000.

European Film Awards - www.europeanfilmacademy.org

Started in 1988, this awards show was organized to give a boost to European filmmaking. The awards are scheduled to take place in December.

Fantasporto - www.caleida.pt/fantasporto

This film festival (scheduled for February & March) that takes place in Portugal is dedicated to fantasy and science fiction films. It has been around since 1981.

Genie Awards - www.academy.ca

These are the main national film awards of Canada celebrating Canadain filmmaking. Started in 1980, Genie Awards are scheduled to take placein February.

German Film Awards - www.deutscherfilmpreis.de

These are the main national film awards in Germany. They have been honoring films for 50 years. The ceremony takes place in June. The site is in German with no "English" option. You can enter the URL into Babel Fish and get a rough translation.

Gijón International Film Festival for Young People

This festival takes place in Gijon, Spain. It has been taking place since 1995. The festival is scheduled for November/December.

Golden Globes - www.goldenglobes.org

The Golden Globes are decided by the Hollywood Foreign Press and include both film and TV awards. The next scheduled ceremony is in January.

Gotham Awards - www.ifp.org/docs.cfm/locales/east/gotham_awards

As you would suspect from the name, these awards take place in New York and celebrate East Coast independent films. The awards began in 1991.

Independent Spirit Awards - www.ifp.org/docs.cfm/locales/west/spirit_awards

These awards celebrate West Coast independent films. The awards take place the weekend before the Academy Awards (and have done so since 1986 when they began).

Karlovy Vary International Film Festival - www.iffkv.cz

This festival takes place in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. This festival (which has taken place since 1946) is scheduled every year in July.

London Critics Circle Awards

London critics event. No website.

MTV Movie Awards

MTV has been handing out Movie Awards since 1982.

National Board of Review, USA

This critics event has taken place since 1932. The honors are announced in January.

New York Film Critics Circle Awards

The NYFCC started in 1935 as an alternative to the Academy Awards. It is made up of New York City newspaper and magazine film critics. No website.

Razzie Awards - www.razzies.com

These are the fun awards - honoring the worst of the year since 1980. They take place in March.

Screen Actors Guild Awards - www.sagawards.org or www.sag.com

The actors voting on awards for actors. The first site is about the awards themselves and the second is about the Screen Actors Guild. The awards have been bestowed since 1995. Next year's honors will be announced in March.

Seattle International Film Festival - www.seattlefilm.com

Yes, they take place in Seattle, WA. This is the only film festival that I have been to. I loved it. If you're in Seattle when the festival is taking place, go. That's all I have to say, pick a film and go. It's spread around to several different theaters - all of which are very cool. Showcases independent and foreign films. The festival has taken place since 1976 and is scheduled for May & June.

Society of Texas Film Critics Awards

I don't know who they are. I can't really find out any information on them via the web. IMDB has lists of awards for 1996 and 1997 and that's as much as I can find out.

Sundance Film Festival - www.sundancefilm.com

This festival takes place in Park City, Utah. Showcases independent films. The institute was founded in 1981 by Robert Redford. The festival takes place in January.

Torino International Festival of Young Cinema - www.torinofilmfest.org

This festival takes place in Torino, Italy. This festival started in 1994 and is scheduled to occur in November.

Toronto International Film Festival - www.bell.ca/filmfest

This festival has taken place since 1976 in Toronto, Canada. The festival takes place in September.

Vancouver International Film Festival - www.viff.org

The Vancouver International Film Festival takes place in September & October. They have been giving out awards since 1981. The site is pretty good.

Venice Film Festival - www.labiennaledivenezia.net

This is the oldest film festival still taking place today. It started in 1932 and has taken place virtually every year since. The next festival will take place in September.

Walk of Fame - www.hollywoodcoc.org/walkoffame/frameset.html

There are 5 categories in the Walk of Fame: motion pictures, TV, radio, recording or live theater. Stars have been added since 1960.

Writers Guild of America - www.wga.org

The last awards from the WGA are given out in March. They have been giving writing awards since 1949.

Young Artist Awards - www.youngartistawards.org

These awards take place in Los Angeles, celebrating youngsters in cinema. These awards have been given since 1978 and are scheduled to take place in April.
