the usual suspects (1995)
Who is Keyser Soze?
I love this film. But then, the question becomes, who doesn't love
this film? It's smart, clever, suspenseful, and very well filmed. It
fulfilled every one of the expectations I went into the theater with.
Fantastic.
The construction of this film - beginning at the end and having to
go back through everything through the eyes of Verbal Kint - is fantastic.
I like having Spacey narrate the action. It works really well.
Finally, it's just a fantastic story. It's very well constructed and
leaves me feeling very satisfied as a film watcher. I went in; I watched;
I was amazed; I was drawn in; I was completely satisfied. How many films
can you say that about?
THINGS
I LOVE
Kevin Spacey.
He won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Verbal Kint
with good reason.
Pete Postlethwaite.
I just love him. And here, he's playing a mysterious messenger with
tons of power. Very cool role for him.
The mystery and
the suspense - thinking you know who Keyser Soze is (if someone hasn't
ruined it for you) - and then changing your mind several times.
FAVORITE
MOMENTS
The dropping
of the cigarette as the boot heel rises off the deck. This is great
filming.
The lineup. The
reading of the phrase.
Kobayashi's visit
to the pool room.
The discussion
about Keyser
Soze between Agent Kujan and Verbal.
The elevator
shaft. Very cool.
The killing of
Arturro Marquez - the pullaway shot.
Agent Kujan's
epiphany.
The
final scene. (click on it if you don't mind me spoiling the ending)
QUOTES
You know a religious
guy names John Paul? - Verbal
He was dead just
long enough for the murder wrap to blow over and then he had lunch.
- Kujan
The greatest
trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.
- Verbal
And like that
... he's gone. Underground. Nobody's ever seen him since. He becomes
a myth. A spook story that criminals tell their kids at night - Rat
on your Pop and Keyser Soze will get you. - Verbal
Keaton always
said I don't believe in God, but I'm afraid of him. Well, I believe
in God, and the only thing that scares me is Keyser Soze. - Verbal
Well, you tell
me Agent Kujan, if I told you the Loch Ness Monster hired me to hit
the harbor, what would you say? - Verbal
It was Keyser
Soze, Agent Kujan. I mean the devil himself. How do you shoot the devil
in the back? What if you miss? - Verbal
