in a lonely place (1950)
spoiler
I am always surprised that this ending was allowed.
It ends on such a dark and unforgiving note. The police investigation
has so affected Laurel and Dixon's relationship that she is leaving
him - and it even gets to the point where he begins to strangle her
when he finds this out. Then the call from the police, saying he is
innocent. The shot of Dixon walking out the apartment and down the steps.
Fantastic. It's hard to believe it was made in 1950.
