high fidelity (2000)
Lists, lists and more lists.
This is a great film. I know the book was set in the UK and that lots
of people were upset that they made it happen in Chicago. I'm actually
OK with this because they did a great job.
John Cusack is wonderful and fits the part really well - but the main
reason I can watch this film more than once is Jack Black. He is fantastic.
Very funny - outrageous - and just a joy to watch.
THINGS I LOVE
The
soundtrack - it's the first thing that hits me about this film.
Top 5 lists.
I enjoyed all the music ones, but I think my favorite was Rob's Top
5 Dream Job List.
Jack Black. Period.
He is so fabulous as Barry. Every time he came on screen, a smile appeared
on my face.
Tim Robbins as
Ian. Perfect.
The Bruce cameos.
Very cool of Bruce to do those.
The end credits
on the posters and whatnot - nice visual closing credits.
FAVORITE MOMENTS
The opening
monologue to the camera about pop lyrics.
The "Monday
Morning Tape" incident - Barry dancing around to "Walking
on Sunshine". Wonderful.
The phone call
with his Mom.
Barry denying
the geek the record. Ultimate music snobbery.
The Ian tirade.
The "yet" discussion.
When Ian comes
into the store - the various scenarios that go through Rob's head. Fantastic.
The metal dude
who comes in about the ad in the window.
The bridge -
when Rob is listing the Top 5 reasons he misses Laura.
Rob's realization
at the bus stop after the funeral. AND THEN flinging himself over the
fence when Laura drives up. This was hilarious.
The subtle art
of making a good compilation tape. Anyone who has ever been a serious
compilation tape maker will appreciate this. I think this is the best
discussion of this lost art that I've heard.
The wedding proposal.
Barry Jive and
the Uptown Five performing - once again, Jack Black is fantastic. I
love Rob cringing when they get up on stage, and then his face when
Barry starts singing. Who knew he could croon so well?
QUOTES
What came first,
music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns or watching
violent videos - that some sort of culture of violence will take them
over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands,
of songs about heartbreak, rejection,
pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable?

wanted to mess me up, you should've got to me earlier. - Rob
I can't fire
